Discrimination Studies and Surveys

Why are they so important?

Discrimination studies are an essential factor in the design of any electrical installations. We carry out exhaustive analysis of the electrical protections needed to guarantee the continuity of supply in case of failure. Although this prevents unwanted power loss, and unwanted breaker tripping, it is a key aspect of an electrical system design that is often overlooked and can result in costly repairs and downtime.

KIPO specialise in providing these studies and reports to address power supply issues and we have provided these studies in many of our projects, including the Excel Energy Centre, the London Olympics Water Polo arena, various hospitals, hotels and data centres.

We use market-leading software to carry out these studies, including Amtech, ERAC’s, Etap, Manufacturer’s software and hand built software.

Below is a list of Discrimination studies and surveys that we provide:

  • Protection

  • Selectivity

  • Grading

  • Coordination

  • Breaker Studies

It is now a mandatory requirement for projects to have selectivity (Discrimination) studies.

Please be aware that BS7671 Regulation 536.2 states:

“Where selectivity between overcurrent protective devices is necessary to prevent danger and where required for proper functioning of the installation, the manufacturer’s instructions shall be taken into account.”
